“Touristy” restaurants making a comeback in New Orleans

With the passing of the 5th year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the recovery effort has once again hit the national spotlight. MSNBC.Com posted an article this week commending the tremendous resurgence of New Orleans restaurants. The article highlights some encouraging statistics. 300 new restaurants have opened in the Greater New Orleans area since the storm and the city now has over 70,000 tourism-related jobs (compared to a pre-Katrina high of 85,000). Last year New Orleans saw 7.5 million tourists and $4.2 billion in tourism spending – despite a sluggish economy and widespread cutbacks in corporate business travel. That’s an increase of almost 4 million tourists from 2006.

While this is certainly great news for the city, numbers don’t always tell the whole story. While Jefferson and Orleans Parish have seen at least 80% of its restaurants reopened since Katrina, St. Bernard Parish has seen less than half of its restaurants return. St. Bernard does enjoy the same tourism traffic compared to Orleans and Jefferson Parish. In fact, many restaurants throughout the city are far removed from tourist hot spots and rely heavily on local support. With a staggering economy, many local restaurants are facing extinction. The oil spill in the gulf hasn’t helped either. It’s great to see the French Quarter coming back full force, but don’t forget about all the great local places. Mondo, a Susan Spicer establishment that opened this summer, is leading the charge in Lakeview’s neighborhood dining scene. La Provence, a John Besh establishment that opened in the fall of last year, headlines the Northshore’s up-and-coming upscale restaurants. And of course, the Marigny Brasserie is always here in the heart of Frenchment Street.

Find the Perfect Wine for Your Favorite Dish

At Marigny Brasserie, we want our customers to make the most of our extensive menu and wine list. By choosing a wine that compliments your entrée, we know that you will immediately find your meal to be more fulfilling and enjoyable. With these helpful guidelines, you don’t have to be a sommelier to chose the perfect white or red wine for your fish, poultry, beef, or pasta dish.

The old and established wine pairing law states that red wine should be served with heavier dishes such as beef or pasta and white wine should be paired with food such as chicken and fish. This adage still applies and can

be more fully explained by the idea that heavy bodied wines go with heavier foods and light bodied wines go with lighter foods. The heaviness of the food and wine should always be directly related, as to not have the wine overpower the food or vice versa. How much body wine has is determined by how powerful and weighty it feels in your mouth.

Generally, light seafood, grilled chicken, and light cheeses all go well with white wine such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, or Pinot Grigio. For those who prefer red wine, a Pinot Noir or Burgundy can also be paired with this type of fair. For pasta dishes, especially those served in a red sauce and beef plates, a flavorful and full-bodied wine is your best bet. Try something such as a Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Here are some pairings you might want to try on your next visit to Marigny Brasserie!

  • Veal Parmesan with Merlot
  • Blackened Catfish Platter or Grilled Chicken Breast Platter with Sauvignon Blanc

The Bustling Bohemian Scene Next Door to the French Quarter

Frenchmen StLocated in the historic Faubourg Marigny neighborhood just one block downriver from the French Quarter, Frenchmen Street is a favorite scene among locals. It isn’t uncommon to hear music pouring out of bar room doors with locals deciding their next stop. Frenchmen Street has exploded in recent years into a vibrant destination for food, music, and good times, but you won’t find daiquiri stands or t-shirt shops here. The area very much caters to locals who bar-hop for live music or eat out along the area’s increasingly diverse restaurant row. Though you can find restaurants serving exotic foods, you can also find recognizable Louisiana favorites at the Marigny Brasserie, where we take a more modern approach to Creole dishes. Stop by and visit us on 640 Frenchmen Street for our happy hour and dinner specials before heading out for live music!
